FAVOURITE PODCASTS 2017
As we are near the end of the year, when is a better time to review what I've been listening to mostly the year of 2017? Podcasts have grown in popularity and demand particularly this year as there are now multiple to choose from with the help of streaming services. Below I've summed up the four I enjoy and listen to most frequently.
I hope you enjoy the post!
The Read
Content: Pop Culture & The African-American Experience
The Read is the first podcast I started
listening to back in 2014 the same year it began I believe. I was in Senegal
and a good friend I made out there from the States showed me the way. The Read
honestly gives me even more reason to look forward to the end of the week. (Episodes
are recorded every Thursday)
The Read hosted by Kid Fury and Crissle is
a New York based podcast where the duo discusses trending topics alongside life lessons and advice. The pairing are brutally honest hence the naming of the podcast show
as they ‘read’ every situation so thoroughly and do not sugarcoat anything. It’s
brilliant as they manage to add so much humor into it all without ever
forgetting the seriousness of the subject matter. The content is heavily
focused on the everyday experiences of African Americans and LBGT people.
My favourite segment: The Listener Letters
Disclaimer: Explicit language
99% Invisible
Hosts: Roman Mars
Content: Architecture & Design
99% invisible is a radio show which is
correctly named as the main topics of discussion is about all the thought
that goes into the things we don’t think about such as the functionality of
unnoticed design that shape our day to day interactions. I was first introduced
to 99% invisible by a classmate at university however I never actually listened
to it until I had finished uni.
This is the kind of podcast that regardless
of what chosen topic to listen to. You would have learnt something new or have
a new appreciation to a skill or craft.
Favourite Ep: Mexico '68
Black Girl In Om
Hosts: Lauren Ash & Deun Ivory
Content: Self Care & Well Being
BGIO is the newest podcast I’ve started to
listen via recommendation from one of the panelist at Black Ballad’s ‘Cocktails and Conversations’ event a couple of months ago. BGIO is the youngest podcasts out my four
favourites having been on the air for three years. The hosts focus on the
themes of gratitude, self-care and black womanhood speaking directly to women
of colour. Which I am most definitely enjoying the rise of. The show will usually
feature a guest from the beauty or wellness industry who will share their own
self care routine and life lessons amongst the hosts Lauren and Deun.
Favourite Ep: A Letter To Our Teenage Selves
Unreported World
Hosts: Varies
Content: Foreign Affairs & Current Events
Unreported World is the audio version of the critically
acclaimed Channel 4 show, The shows gives us an insight into the lives of
people from different parts of the globe. I prefer to listen to it rather than
watch because I can get on with another task as I listen to an episode.
Favourite Ep: Miss Crimea
All of these podcasts vary but thats what I enjoy about them they all serve a different purpose,
however I am aware that 3/4 are US based podcasts. I'm always on the look out for new and interesting shows, so let me know what you find especially in terms of UK podcasts and I'll give it a listen.
